Canadian
Grand Masters Fiddle Camp is located
10 kilometres south of Ottawa at the RCMP Campsite, Long Island Locks, Manotick,
Ontario. The campus includes 14 cabins, washrooms, a covered barbeque pit and
picnic tables.
Randy Foster
Camp Director
The camp is designed for fiddlers and pianists who want to learn old-time fiddle
tunes and piano accompaniment. The emphasis is on playing by ear. There
are classes for beginners, intermediate and advances players. Piano players
should have a basic knowledge of chords. |

Gordon Stobbe’s passion for fiddle music has
enriched our cultural heritage. A performer, composer, teacher and publisher, he
has toured with several bands, including his own trio, for more than 40 years.
In the 1980s, he hosted a popular variety show that featured local talent and
helped launch the careers of many successful artists. Devoted to the
preservation of fiddle music, he has tirelessly built a nationwide network of
workshops and camps to introduce the joys of this rich tradition to others. |

_________________________________________ Fiddlers Entertain “Friends in
Sportfishing” Special Needs Kids
A wonderful charity was discovered this summer at The
Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Camp: Friends in Sportfishing, run by a group of
volunteers. They invite special needs and seniors groups to spend an hour on
their boat on the Long Island Locks.
“Sportfishing” has five accessible 28’ pontoon boats,
servicing over 120 social service agencies in Perth, Carleton Place and Ottawa
operating five days a week June to September. And they don’t charge.
When Brian Hebert heard about this group, he asked his fiddle
class to perform for one of the special needs groups after their boat ride.
While the children from “Special Needs Camp Keshet for Kids”
ate their lunch on picnic benches, Brian’s class played
a variety of fiddle tunes to the delight of their audience, including
“Sportfishing” volunteers: Former RCMP Ron Chaytor and David Ledoux.
After the performance, the fiddlers were invited to take
a
ride on the boat.
Of course, they couldn't resist playing music
as they headed down the Ottawa River.
